Alternate Frame Doubles 2014

This year we tried something new...bowling on a holiday.  Since the Hal Ross is on a holiday we thought why not try the Alternate Frame Doubles on a holiday.  We saw an increase of 3 teams which in the long run was a plus even if it was a long day.

Thanks to Curtis Turko, who graciously donated two $50.00 gift cards for Mongos Grill, we were able to give an award for the first 300 of the tournament.  Right out of the gate we thought we had it given away to the Tereck Brothers, but they were just shy, only bowling a 298.  By game 8 we were finally able to give it away to Mike Schmidt and David Dorge.  Congrats gentlemen!

As for the tournament...it was a lot of fun!  With the format of this tournament, you never know what will happen.  The point of the Alternate Frame Doubles is for each partnership to bowl a game together, each person bowling on a different lane (i.e. Bowler 1 bowls all his frames on lane 1 and Bowler 2 bowls all his frames on lane 2).  You never know if you and your partner will click and put the games together perfectly.  But a lot of the pairings did just that.  There were a lot of high games which was great to see.

Game 12 is a position round which proved to be just as exciting as the previous 11 games.  Going into the position round there was only one pin between 4th place and 5th place, and only one pin between 5th place and 6th place.  It really does go to show how much getting every pin counts.  And personally, I love those close matches!

After a long day the top five were:  Sean Coutts/Rob Dufreane, Doug Ross/Curtis Turko, Jon Snyder/Steve Snyder, Dan Tereck/Gord Tereck, Michael Schmidt/David Dorge.

The stepladder was played on 25/26 with the gold pins.  Another first.  Normally we swap pairs each stepladder game, and it's been a long time since we used gold pins.  But in the end it was a great stepladder.

After all said and done, Michael Schmidt and David Dorge walked away with the title.  After many years of being partners, they finally got a win.  Congratulations gentlemen!

Once again,  a huge thank you to Curtis Turko for donating gift cards!  Your generosity is greatly appreciated!  Everyone should go to Mongos Grill...it's absolutely delicious!!

I hope everyone had fun!  Please let us know what you think of the change to bowling on a holiday.  Hope to see everyone out for the next tournament, March 30 at Laverendrye Lanes which will be a 8 game singles.  Good luck to all!

CONGRATULATIONS MIKE AND DAVID!!!

(I apologize for anything amazing that happened that I may have forgotten to mention, long day...  And apologize for the crappy picture...I really thought it was better than that...)

MCBA/Chateau 5 Game Classic 2013

This year the MCBA Singles Classic was combined with the Chateau Classic.  They put out the Manitoba Open shot, The Beaten Path, for all those who wanted to the practice in a tournament setting.  We saw the same amount of people as our last year’s singles tournament at this time last year with a total of 17 bowlers.

The top four changed hands quite a few times in the five games that were played.  In the end, however, the top four was:  Joseph Franchewski, Lynne Gauthier, Michael Schmidt and Sean Coutts.

In this tournament we do a curling-style page play down.  First place and second place play each other on one pair, while third place and fourth place play each other on another pair.  The winner of the match between first and second automatically gets a bye into the finals.  The winner of the match between third and fourth goes on to play the loser of the match between first and second.  The winner of that match goes on to  play first place in the finals.

Joseph and Lynne played each other, while Michael and Sean played each other.  Joseph beat Lynne 266 to 222.  Michael beat Sean in a close match 214 to 211.  Michael then went on to beat Lynne 228 to 225 in the semi-finals.  After a good run, Joseph was beat in the finals by Michael, 242 to 212.

Great job by all bowlers on Kegel’s Challenge Pattern, the Beaten Path!  Good luck to all those bowling in the Manitoba Open on January 4 and 5, 2014 at Chateau Lanes!

CONGRATULATIONS MICHAEL SCHMIDT!

Hal Ross Doubles - November 11, 2013

The MCBA tournament season has officially begun, starting it off with the Hal Ross Doubles held at Laverendrye Salle de Quilles.  A huge thank you to our sponsors, Chez Cora and Laverendrye Salle de Quilles, without who we would not be able to give out the prize money we do.  For those who were able, we enjoyed a very delightful breakfast at Chez Cora before starting a very long day.

After a few years of depleted teams, we decided to change the format.  We decided to try cutting the field to a maximum of 24 teams, causing us to completely revamp the tournament.  And lucky for us we ended up with 21 teams, causing only three John Does to be needed.  It worked out well, all John Does being knocked out by the end of round two.

We were fortunate to see a total of seven youth bowlers participating this year.  Congratulations to all the youth bowlers who came out to bowl.  A couple decided to take a scholarship while a few took cash.  Ever since the Canadian Tenpin Federation took away Rule 19, participation has improved significantly and the youth are showing the adults just what they can do.

There were quite a few close games this year, which was a great thing to see.  Joseph Franchewski and Liam Naylor knocked Michael Schmidt and Jon Domingo onto the B-Side after a close match.  The two duos would later meet in the semi-finals, but unfortunately Mike and Jon were better prepared beating Joe and Liam, knocking them out of the tournament.  Joe and Liam finished third.

Austyn Ducharme and his partner Ryan Kruk came down to the final frame to Lynne Gauthier and Sharon Tataryn, only falling one pin behind.  Austyn and Ryan finished 5th Good bowling Austyn and Ryan!

Lynne and Sharon went undefeated on the A-Side, meeting Mike and Jon in the finals.  After two matches, since the A-Side winners need to be beaten twice, Mike and Jon walked away with first place.  This is a first even win for doubles partners Mike and Jon, finishing second, third and fourth together in the Hal Ross in previous years.

Congratulations Mike and Jon on your big win!

Alternate Frame Doubles 2013

This year’s Alternate Frame Doubles tournament was held on February 10, 2013, at Chateau Lanes. It was certainly an interesting one to watch. With a couple more entries than the previous year, including a youth powerhouse duo, we were pleased. From the get-go, our youth duo, Mitch Hupé and Sean Coutts, proved to be an unstoppable force. Starting out of the gate with a 266 and a 257, Mitch and Sean led the tournament from game two. It quickly became a tournament of who could throw the most strikes. By the end of the 12 games, Mitch and Sean had a total of 2801 (not including their bonus points), an average of 233. They won 9 of their matches, taking an additional 180 pins for a grand total of 2981. Good job boys!

There were a lot of great games thrown by all the duos including: 266, 257, 235, 226, 243, 259, 223, 234 and 230 by Sean and Mitch; 279, 269, 247 and 270 by Mark and Stew; 225, 226, 228, 245, 248, 237 and 236 by Mathieu and Clem; 235, 246, 236, 221, 225 by Jason B. and Rob; 231, 236(x2), 244, 258 and 228 by David and Mike; 229(x2), 227, 235, and 242 by Dan and Jason S.; 247, 226 and 249 by Sharon and Lynne; 230, 247, 268 and 224 by Denis and Jon; 235(x2), 223 and 225 by David and Thomas; 267 and 236 by Robbie and Randy.

There was a stepladder of the top four duos: Mitch Hupé and Sean Coutts, Mark Soriano and Stew Mackenzie, Clem Perreault and Mathieu Friolet, and Rob Dufreane and Jason Borle. Mark and Stew, and Clem and Mathieu were thrown together last minute after unforeseeable circumstances, but that didn’t stop these two duos from bowling up a storm and finishing in the top. However, after a rigorous stepladder which was filled with games of “I don’t want it, you can have it”, Mitch Hupé and Sean Coutts won the tournament. Hopefully we see more from these two great youth bowlers in the future.

CONGRATULATIONS MITCH AND SEAN!
